It's not hard to figure out the basic procedures for using forums and newsgroups. With a little research you can find the right groups in which to bolster your online reputation. But actually building a good reputation is another matter. These areas of the online marketplace abound with messages that are never read, or worse, messages that generate hostile responses. Building a positive reputation on a newsgroup or forum takes time, and it requires tact. Here's a list of key points to remember as you go about promoting your business in forums and newsgroups:
- DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Diligently seek out forums and newsgroups that relate to your business as closely as possible. The more closely a discussion group's topic relates to your business, the more likely its members are to become your customers. Lurk on any group for at least a week before you even consider posting a message to it. Make sure you understand the group's culture and ettiquette before you join the discussion.
- DON'T WASTE THE GROUP'S TIME. Post messages that are on the topic, and that add to the discussion. Don't simply agree with others, and don't post blatant ads. Back up your opinions with facts.
- BE HELPFUL. If you see a posting or article someplace else that your group might appreciate (and it's author allows it to be reproduced), post it with your comments. Whenever someone posts a question and you can provide all or part of the answer, do so. This is the best way to gain other members' respect.
- USE A COMPANY SIGNATURE. People can't find you or your online store if they don't know your address. Sign every message with your name, company name, and address.
- BE ATTENTIVE. Check your newsgroups and forums every day or two for new messages, and participate in the discussion whenever you have something to add. Frequent postings equal visibility.
- BE PATIENT. Success doesn't happen overnight. Group members must learn to trust you by the quality of your contributions to the discussion. Some people may not have an interest in your product or service for months, but it if you persistantly and patiently stay involved, they'll remember you.
